Ben Affleck broke a big story on the Project Greenlight red carpet the other day when he said to E! News that Matt Damon would reprise the role of Jason Bourne.

After that, Matt Damon has confirmed the news: “It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

Universal is expecting to recapture the franchise’s box office magic. Paul Greengrass directed the second and third movies from the franchise, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), which were very lucrative for the studio.

When both Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass announced that they finished with the story and the character, the mantle and weapons training passed to Jeremy Renner who played the comely amnesiac spy in 2012’s The Bourne Legacy with Tony Gilroy as director. This movie didn’t meet their expectations at the box office. Universal is expecting that fans will come back with a new movie with Damon and Greengrass.

What we don’t know yet is whether the Bourne film planned for 2016 with Jeremy Renner and director Justin Lin will still happen or whether amnesia will strike the studio.
